We ran every model on carpet, hardwood, and pet hair over two weeks each, and scored them on cleaning performance, mapping accuracy, noise, and app reliability. Here's what actually held up.
Best overall: strong suction, quiet self-empty base, reliable room mapping.
Best value: no self-empty base, but excellent carpet cleaning for the price.
Best for pet hair: dual side brushes and a large-capacity dustbin.
Each robot vacuum ran on the same 900 sq ft test floor (mixed carpet and hardwood) for two weeks. We measured debris pickup with a standardized flour-and-oat mixture, timed full-home mapping on first run, and logged app disconnects. Full methodology is on our About page.
Self-emptying models dock and empty their own dustbin into a larger base bag, so you empty it every 1-2 months instead of after every run. They cost more but need far less maintenance.
Most modern models handle low-to-medium pile carpet fine. Thick shag carpet reduces suction effectiveness on nearly every model we tested — the AuraX R5 Max held up best in our tests.
